Requests for Emergency Assistance Reach An All-Time-High

Since Operation Homefront was founded shortly after 9/11, we have met over 750,000 needs for military families. With the U.S. military’s withdrawal from Iraq and the ongoing drawdown of troop levels in Afghanistan, some Americans may think that the need for emergency financial assistance is ending as well.

Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, requests for emergency aid for these heroic families have spiked, and Operation Homefront’s caseworkers are working overtime to keep up with requests for assistance.

In the last three months, our number of unresolved open cases has increased 200 percent.

If you are a service member, veteran, wounded warrior, or military spouse seeking help from Operation Homefront, note the following tips to help our caseworkers process your request as quickly as possible.

  • All initial requests for assistance must be made online at OperationHomefront.net. The online forms are compatible with most laptop and desktop computers, but NOT with tablets or smartphones.
    • Our technical support staff recommends using the Firefox web browser to access the website. If you experience errors in the application process, try the following steps:
      • Clear your temporary internet files, browsing history, and cache. This can be found in the “Options” or “Internet Options” menu of most web browsers.
      • Ensure you allow pop-ups on OH websites. Blocking pop-ups will cause some steps of the application to fail.
      • Ensure you are not behind a strong firewall. If so, you may need to try applying from another computer.
  • The online pre-application form outlines eligibility guidelines and documentation requirements to receive assistance. Please be prepared to submit eligibility documentation as soon as possible. Documents you will need to provide include:
    • Proof of all household income, like your most recent LES or RAS, civilian pay, disability benefits, etc.
    • For wounded, ill, or injured service members, Line of Duty documentation or other official DoD or VA record of a wound, illness, or injury being sustained in the line of duty during post-9/11 service.
    • For families of deployed personnel, a copy of deployment orders.
    • For veterans & retirees, a copy of the final discharge document, such as a DD214 or NGB22
    • Copies of the most recent bills on which assistance is being requested

We know that every request for emergency financial assistance is urgent. Our military produces proud, independent warriors who ask for assistance only when it is truly needed. Our caseworkers are meeting needs not only for your family, but for your shipmates, your battle buddies, and your wingmen.

Operation Homefront has hired additional caseworkers and is upgrading its technical infrastructure to better meet the needs of our military families. With such a dramatic increase in demand for assistance, we ask for your patience in working to meet your emergency need.
