Bret Michaels Joins Operation Homefront for NYC Home Giveaway

Marine Corps Lance Corporal Matthew Callaghan thought he was one of many first responders or veterans being honored at the Bret Michaels' SOLD OUT show at the BB King Blues Club in NYC. What he didn't know is that he would soon be surprised with much more. Bret Michaels brought the house down by giving away a mortgage free home to this very deserving wounded veteran and firefighter. Matt and his wife, Amanda, received the home as part of our Homes on the Homefront program and Bret's work with Feal Good Foundation.

Learn more about Marine Corps Lance Corporal Matthew Callaghan:
Born and raised in Lindenhurst, N.Y., Matthew Callaghan grew up with service to his country as a very important aspect to his life. He joined the Marine Corps shortly after his 2005 high school graduation in order to fulfill his lifelong dream of service. Unfortunately, his military service would not last as long as he had hoped.

Not long after enlisting, Matthew would deploy to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. While deployed, a helicopter crash, as well as the blast from an improvised explosive device (IED) would cause Matthew multiple injuries that would eventually lead to his medical retirement just over two years after his enlistment. Following his injury, doctors were unsure if he would ever be able to use one of his arms again, but like many times in his life Matthew overcame the odds.

Since his transition from military service, Matthew has moved back to New York to be close to family and friends. He has worked hard to get back the use of his arm and build muscle strength. He and his wife Amanda gave birth to their first child in March and have been looking for a way to own a home near where Matthew grew up.

In August of 2013, the family was selected to receive a mortgage-free home in Matthew’s hometown of Lindenhurst, just 20 minutes from where the Purple Heart recipient currently serves in a different capacity, as a firefighter. The new home will allow them to grow as a family, while staying close to their support system.
