Guard and Reserve Family Readiness Programs Toolkit
The Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Reserve Affairs has
developed the Guard and Reserve Family Readiness Programs Toolkit. It
is a toolkit to help commanders, members, and family in preparing units
for the separations that take place during mobilization and deployment.
Though aimed at reserve component members, active duty military members
and their families will also find it a very useful reference.
The checklists
and tips listed can help prevent your family from feeling overwhelmed
and the checklists can be used to record important family matters.
It
also includes the Guide to Reserve Family Member Benefits. This explains
what military benefits are available, including medical and dental benefits,
commissary and exchange privileges, military pay and allowances and re-employment
rights.
A separate checklist for single service members is also included
because preparation for deployment is also essential for single service
members

Servicemembers
Civil Relief Act
On 19 December 2003, President Bush signed into law the “Servicemembers
Civil Relief Act” (SCRA). This law is a complete revision of the Soldiers’ and
Sailors’ Civil Relief Act (SSCRA) which provided a number of significant
protections to servicemembers including: reducing interest to 6% on pre-service
loans and obligations; and requiring court action before a servicemember’s
family can be evicted from rental property for nonpayment of rent if the monthly
rent is $1,200 or less. The SSCRA was largely unchanged from its enactment in
1940. The SCRA was written to: clarify the language of the SSCRA: to incorporate
many years of judicial interpretation of the SSCRA; and to update the SSCRA to
reflect new developments in American life since 1940.
