Operation Support Our Troops

Did you know that there are close to 150,000 American servicemen and women deployed overseas in defense of our country? Many of these troops are living in very difficult conditions with few, if any "creature comforts".

The mission of Operation Support Our Troops Illinois is to supplement the basic provisions provided to American soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan. The packages we send include packaged treats and toiletries that our troops cannot easily obtain overseas. The need for basic items is great, and OSOT Illinois ships approximately 60 boxes per week from the Chicagoland area to servicemen and women primarily serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.

With summertime heat averaging 111 degrees in Iraq and 98 degrees in Afghainstan, Operation Support Our Troops has put together a wish list of care package items to help.

  • Powdered drink mix (crystal light, gatorade, sweetened koolaid)
  • Crossword puzzle or word game books
  • Athletic socks
  • Canned or foil packed tuna, chicken or beef products
  • Beef jerky
  • Canned or individual serving sizes of fruit
  • Snack bars (granola, power bars, etc)
  • cans or bags of nuts

KNITTERS RALLY FOR SOLDIERS
SPRINGFIELD, IL: During the Civil War civilian volunteers tore cotton into strips to supply the army’s with bandages. In both WWI and WWII, volunteers rallied to provide our fighting forces with handmade wool gloves, socks and stocking caps to keep the Soldiers dry and warm. Today, Soldiers stationed in Iraq, Afghanistan and Kosovo are exposed to winds and bitter cold during the winter months. (Click here to learn how to make a Helmet Liner for a servicemember)
